Romantic, inspiring and perfect for meeting up with friends or re-kindling flames with a loved one. Secret gardens are magical and Zurich is full of them. We set out to find the best gardens to enjoy a café or glass of vino and pinch yourself…because you live here in these beautiful surroundings!
Frau Gerolds Garten
Not much of a secret any longer, as this 2500 sq. meter city garden project in Kries 5, just next to the Freitag tower, is buzzing with Zurich’s trendiest personalities. Open Mon – Sat until midnight, the garden’s kitchen is stocked with fresh herbs, veggies and tasty creations spanning BBQ, pasta and Soul Food. Reservations are not required unless you plan a group of 10 or more…check out the Design Market on Saturday’s from 11.00-17.00 where you can meet some inspirational local designers and marvel at their creative goods! A local hideaway well worth the visit, not only for the beautiful secret garden, but also for the culinary delights. Utilizing only fresh produce from small businesses who take pride in organic farming. The wine list centers around wines from central Europe, paying special attention not only to the quality of the wines, but also to the ecological footprint resulting from each. We highly recommend the fish on the menu, though the specialty of the house is the steak a la Bürgli-Pfännli in a café de Paris sauce. Decisions, decisions.
Tucked away between Bahnhof Wiedikon and Werd is the charming secret garden of the Gartenhof. The cuisine is not only seasonally delicious, but carefully sourced from regional purveyors who take pride in sustainable business practices. We love their 3-course menu for under CHF 50, and their small, but very well selected wine list. There is much to enjoy at the Gartenhof…just escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy this lovely restaurant!
Invite a girlfriend to join you for lunch in this discreet and cozy location, or order a bento box to go and soak in the sun at the Old Botanical Garden just across the river. The summer card includes the opening favorite – the crispy duck salad, alongside the freshest sashimi you will find in Zurich.
Baur au Lac Terrasse
Pamper your inner goddess with delicately selected drinks and light dishes in this private park overlooking the lake. Warm nights call for gorgeous summer dresses and cold Champagne in this heavenly location secretly hiding right in the heart of Zurich. Mark your calendar for some of the summer’s hottest parties in the garden: Züri Fäscht and Boum Boum au Lac.

Impress your out of town guests while on a lovely stroll through the heart of Niederdorf, get lost between buildings, turn down a narrow cobble stone corridor and end up at one of the most delightful secret gardens our city has to offer. Wirtschaft Neumarkt may seem to be a quaint little restaurant and bar, but it really is the perfect hideaway to enjoy quality cuisine and a thirst-quenching beer or glass of bubbly.
Hotel Glockenhof – Glogge Egge
Rarely do we think to meet at a hotel, but the man behind the Long Night of Hotel Bars introduced us to the renovated Glockenhof. Just across the street from Hiltl, this hotel has an outstanding garden, ideal for an apéro or lovely escape from the bustling city. Enjoy the same dining menu in the garden, as you would find in the restaurant, offering unique creations with Swiss, Italian and Asian influences.
This beautiful setting is a hidden gem, as the food is just as exceptional as the location and prices are modest. Staffed by students at the adjoining Hotel Management School, Restaurant Belvoir offers a fabulous dining experience while eager young apprentices practice their five-star skills. Complete your experience with a cultural visit to Museum Reitberg either before or after your meal.
