Why Swiss Hotels offering a Kitchenette is a MUST this Summer

Increased protective measures allow us to travel freely and responsibly throughout Switzerland this summer. It is within our human nature to want to explore, and the current health crisis has us thinking out-of-the-box for safe ways to satisfy our travel desires while protecting ourselves and the community around us.

It’s a Choice

Therefore, we decided to look specifically for hotels that offer a kitchenette…here’s why:

Although Coronavirus cases continue to increase, we are fortunately very safe here in Switzerland. For us, traveling around the country is a privilege, but we are all trying to protect our elders with social distancing, face masks on public transport and proper sanitization requirements, as outlined by the Federal Office of Public Health. Life must go on, but we must also go on respecting our neighbors more than ever before and that is why we consulted with the team at Swiss Hospitality Collection to discover their recommendation of properties within their portfolio that offer:

  1. Desirable Location
  2. Fair Pricing
  3. Quality Service
  4. Clean and Safe Accommodations
  5. In-Room Kitchenette

It didn’t take long until we had a wonderful selection of cities and properties to choose from so we could begin planning our summer getaways…responsibly of course. Join us on our Tour de Suisse and should any properties tickle your fancy, these hotels are desperate to welcome travelers this summer. Pack your bags, get ready to explore, and let’s enjoy a fabulous #SafeSwissSummer!

Set Hotel by Der Teufelhof Basel

Just one hour from Zurich, Basel is our favorite city escape. From Museum Tinguely to Fondation Beyeler and the Vitra Design House (bring your passports as it’s just across the German border), there is so much to discover…not to mention the hundreds of independent art installations and pop-ups scattered all throughout the city. With all those brushstrokes, colors and interpretations swirling in our heads, we suggest resting your pretty little head within one of the well-appointed Courtyard Design Apartments at SET Hotel. Four rooms are 31m² with a kitchen and even a private washing machine, while 9 additional studios are 26m² complete with a kitchenette. Beyond this fabulous amenity to ensure safe social distancing, there is a selection of eBikes awaiting your visit. Doesn’t an afternoon of gallery-hopping followed by a swim in the Rhine sound divine? Book your #SafeSwissSummer getaway here:

Grischa Hotel Davos

We first heard about Grischa Hotel Davos when a craving for Chinese food hit our palatte after exploring the newly opened Foxtrail Davos last summer. Little did we know at the time, the Grischa’s Golden Dragon is considered one of Switzerland’s top Chinese restaurants. Now, the 135m² Schwarzhorn Alpine Suite and 110m² Grialetsch Suite are beckoning, complete with a fully equipped kitchen and accommodations for the discerning traveler. The property is very family friendly and with five gastronomically diverse dining options within the hotel, room service is a fabulous option so you can use your kitchen for plating, rather than cooking after a long day of hiking and swimming where global leaders gather at the WEF Annual Meeting to collaborate towards a cohesive and sustainable world. Arc-en-ciel Gstaad

“I feel very adventurous. There are so many doors to be opened,
and I’m not afraid to look behind them.”
-Elizabeth Taylor at her chalet in Gstaad

Where Royals ski and Madonna gives her middle finger to the camera, we love the elegance and diversity of Gstaad. Last time we visited, 8 year olds on the playground were overheard discussing upcoming holiday travel plans amongst each other with distinguished poise. Beyond the elegance, Gstaad is incredibly friendly and welcoming, particularly when the scales of equality are balanced on the hiking trails. The Arc-en-ciel is a charming apartment chalet “close to the shopping promenade and even closer to the mountain lifts”. Here, your 4-legged furry family member is a welcome guest, and you are welcome to chill by the pool while enjoying a good summer novel and refreshing cocktail made in your very own kitchenette (don’t forget the citrus for a twist). Einstein St. Gallen

If you have never set foot inside the Abbey of St. Gallen, please add it to your bucket list while living in Switzerland, as the medieval monastic library and Cathedral in rococo style are rich in history and considered among the most important in Europe. Just steps from this cozy vault for more than 170,000 religious texts that have been well preserved, you will find the Einstein Hotel and their 80m² apartments with kitchenette and private outdoor terrace overlooking the rooftops of St. Gallen. Breakfast on your balcony followed by an afternoon of exploring the Textile Museum and rich cultural history interrupted only by a perfectly grilled St. Galler bratwurst & bürli (for our non-vegan friends) could be the perfect escape just 1 hour east of Zurich. Astra Vevey

Oh how we love Vevey! This slice of paradise along the Montreux “Dolce” Riviera is filled with cultural activities such as Chaplin’s World welcoming you to the former residence of the man himself, the Alimentarium, the Swiss Museum of Games and two favorite restaurants Ze Fork and Pizzeria Vecchia Napoli (for takeaway). The hotel also recommends Kju Restaurant and Club…not to mention the many local Lavaux wines worth sipping your way through to discover your favorites. For families with little thrill seekers, the Aquaparc is just another reason to extend your stay, especially since entrance is free with your Montreux Riviera tourist card. This year there are many more discounts available such as 20% off your stay with B. WelQome and with each stay of 2 nights or more you will receive an additional prepaid voucher of CHF 100 to be used within the canton with the “Vaud à la carte” campaign, good at many restaurants, museums, animal parks, winemakers and more. Greulich Zurich

Are you reading this as a resident living outside Zurich or would you like to enjoy a little stay-cation exploring your own backyard as a tourist? We love the welcoming simplicity of Greulich’s Living Design Lofts, complete with kitchenette in this comfortable 55m² space. On the ground floor, enjoy Restaurant Blau where their octopus-chorizo salad and locally raised black angus beefsteak tartare are scrumptious, among many other choices that mirror your mood. The summer brings events such as Xenix OpenAir, should it be raining you can disappear in the Volkshaus Hammam&Spa, and Frau Gerolds has a cold beer waiting for you. A special thanks to the team at Swiss Hospitality Collection for encouraging travel around Switzerland this summer. It is expected that 25% of hotels and restaurants will not survive the Corona-crisis so every single visit helps these independent businesses make it over the hump. We suggest staying overnight in your kitchenette-appointed room and ordering delivery from local restaurants as often as your budget allows. Sending you and your families virtual hugs and a safe and healthy summer!
