We have rediscovered one of Zurich’s best restaurants offering casual elegance at it’s finest, and Zuri Girl has fallen in love with Rive Gauche. Although this restaurant has been legendary for years, it finds ways to routinely reinvent itself, offering us a trendy hot spot with mouth-watering appetizers, entrées and desserts, accompanied by elegant wines just waiting to be your host for the next business luncheon or summer dinner on the outdoor Terrasse.
The Atmosphere: Fine casual dining is their tagline, and fine casual dining it indeed is. The dark wood undertones are an ode to the 100-year former cigar bar history, while the light upholstery and accents blend in a sleek and modern feeling. The booths add a touch of nonchalance, or if it’s a night out with your man…a reason to cozy up nice and close for a romantic dinner.
The Menu: With catchy names like “Shiitake That”, “Smashing Pumpkins”, “Dixie Chick” and “Found Nemo”, the menu itself is a great conversation piece for ice-breaking moments. Beyond the humorous titles, you are welcomed into a gourmet’s heaven.
Start your meal off with a freshly made soup or salad. Pan-fried king prawn with braised honey pumpkin sounds oh-so scrumptious, and lobster cream soup certainly wins over a Zuri Girl’s heart.
With mouth-watering steak specialties, guests may choose from 3 different high-quality meats offered in three different cuts to fit all appetites. (Win over any man’s heart by offering the 500-gram Rib Eye…oh my!).
While their reputation has been built on grilled meats, the sea bass is served on an eye-catching orange saffron fennel and vegetarians have several options to select from including a popular grilled tofu with marinated vegetables, feta cheese and pine nuts.
Meats and fish are served a la carte so be sure to order a side such as the red cabbage with chestnuts or spinach with shallots.
Chocolate lovers might go straight for dessert. We all know the famous chocolate labels of Switzerland, but did you know that the Baur au Lac features their own house made 70% cacao chocolate label, “1844”? It is magnificent! We suggest allowing the additional 12 minutes for the chocolate cake to be prepared especially for you…but if you can’t wait, go straight for the “D for Two”, a taste of all their desserts or the “Chocoholic” where you can try their signature chocolates like cinnamon chocolate, mint chocolate and cacao chocolate. All equally decadent!
The Drinks: Priding themselves on only using fresh and fine ingredients for their cocktails, even boasting while chatting with Zuri Girl that they make “The best Bellini in the city”, drinks are a natural fit to their upscale menu.
You won’t be surprised to find a varied wine menu, considering they feature a dedicated wine cellar, their own wine label and an adjacent wine shop, “Baur au Lac Vins”.
Mark your calendar for the 3rd day of the week, in the 3rd week of the month for their Triple 3 Double Magnum Bottles where guests can enjoy rare treasures of their wine collection.
Why we love it: In addition to the exceptional dining offerings, Rive Gauche hosts a sexy & fun annual Summer Bash, Halloween Party and numerous other unique events that those in the know look forward to on an annual basis. A social butterfly’s must.
All year long, we look forward to spring for the opening of the Rive Gauche Terrasse, an outdoor lounge where you’ll find life’s best indulgences…champagne & summer cocktails, a Mediterranean feeling and a fabulous scene in an atmosphere filled with casual elegance, mixed with a few of Zurich’s socialites and party goers. We hear the Grilled Tuna Steak is not to be missed!
Zuri Girl Tip: 49 minutes & 49 francs. Zuri Girls and your lunch dates can enjoy a 2-course business lunch offer – an ideal office escape during lunchtime, especially when in need to entertain clients. The menu changes wekly, but the quick service and gourmet food is deliciously reliable. Make life even simpler by securing a reservation online. It’s super easy & convenient.
Did you know: Rive Gauche is part of the historical Hotel Baur au Lac, a 6th generation owned 5-star hotel. It was a Grill Room for 100 years before transitioning into the Restaurant we have come to love and enjoy on a regular basis.
