The summer beach getaways are months away, December holidays left nothing but extra kilos and now we are faced with cold, long dark days of winter. Fear not ladies, Zuri Girl never disappoints and always has a secret to keep you smiling! Anticipating the winter months, she has been searching the streets of Zurich for cozy refuges – escapes hiding the icicle cars and snow-covered rooftops.
Fireplaces Restaurants. That’s right, ladies. Fireplaces – they’re romantic, their cozy, their warm – they are everything one yearns for on a winter day. And this month we present 3 fabulous Zurich establishments crackling with charcoal and burning flames to warm your fingers, toes and everything in between. So lace up the snow boots and head to a fireplace restaurant this month. Here are Zuri Girl’s favorite 3.
Converted from the building’s 100 year old furnace, what was once utilized for the workmens’ daily grind now (and for the past 17 years since the restaurant opened), serves the purpose of igniting romance, warmth and coziness to meal time.
The Food & Drinks
Spontaneous minds love the elegant menu (presented in German and English) as it changes daily and is only announced online a few hours prior to mealtime. The Swiss Chef inspired by Mediterranean and Asian Cuisines offers a 3×3 philosophy (3 options for starters, mains and deserts).
On Sundays an “all you can eat” brunch buffet fills hungry bellies and free child care is part of the gig.
Main dishes begin at CHF 26 / Sunday Brunch CHF 49.
Entering through the red velvet curtains, you completely forget the noisy, industrial vibe of Oerlikon’s business district and immediately are swept away to a candlelit adventure. Die Giesserei features 2 Dining Areas – one is a more traditional dining space while the other hosts the fireplace, artistic inspired bar and open-kitchen. Can you guess which table Zuri Girl requests?
It’s amazing how romantic the restaurant feels given you are standing on a 100-year old floor and heavy duty “manly” equipment still makes up the majority of the scene. Originally a foundry, the restaurant team only converted what was necessary allowing the rustic character of the restaurant to be created simply from the building itself and the history it provides. Exposed pipes, pressure gauges and valves compliment new enhancements like the custom built bar and blends of beiges, browns and splashes of red velvet furniture all surrounded by hundreds of candles. It’s difficult to spot a space without a candle!
When to Go
Sunday Brunch: 10.00-14.00
Opens Saturday at 15.00

Ok, we must prevent the true fireplace aficionado from calling this fireplace a hoax (as it is electric) but what it lacks in wood, it makes up in power, as the flames rise to 30cm high and it’s beautiful glow snug along the wall, acts as the room’s centerpiece burning for approximately 2,800 hours annually.
The Food & Drinks
A casual menu, famous locally for its juicy Burger and deluxe Club Sandwich with Tea being the warm beverage of choice and a large selection of delicious sweet treat cakes, pies and desserts. If your calorie counter alarm rings, ask instead for the Brain Food Concept Menu Card, a healthy menu created in collaboration with nutritionist Marianne Botta Diener and loved for it’s vitamin packed smoothies.
Main dishes begin at CHF 26.
The only 5-star luxury chain in Zurich’s city center, the Lobby Lounge is the heart of the hotel where locals subtly mix with corporate suits and luxury travelers all receiving nothing less than 5-stars… 5-star service, 5-star food and 5-star ambiance. The Lounge is a grand room, adjacent to the main foyer and blending traditional seating with oversized armchairs and long couches. Hundreds of guests enjoy the Lounge daily and vary from business breakfasts to family gatherings to coffee-time for moms…you may even spot a celebrity sitting fireside!
When to Go
Open daily all year (after all it is a hotel lobby!) with the fireplace flaming from approximately October to March depending on how Mother Nature is treating us. Service is available from 6.00 – midnight.

Every couple months an old school farmer fills his tractor trailer with wood and makes his regular delivery to Chez Crettol so visitors can enjoy their raclette melted to perfection in the fireplace itself.
The Food and Drinks
True to their roots, the family owned and operated restaurant receives their food and wine selection directly from Wallis. The family personally selects all cheeses, meats and wines from Wallis’ best farms and producers.
The menu features 7 variations of Fondue including a champagne fondue and truffle fondue with their specialty, raclette, cooked on the open-flamed fireplace. Not to worry carnivores…daily specials feature meats and regulars rave about the family’s special salad dressing.
Main dishes begin at CHF 32.
Founded 32 years ago by a husband and wife team, and continuing now to the next generation of son and daughter, the sincere welcome is none other than what a family owned restaurant can provide. The owners love when guests feel at home – they encourage guests to stay as long as they like and relax as they would in their own living room.
The restaurant is divided into 2 rooms with the 2nd being referred to as “the boutique” as for the restaurants first twenty years it was a hair salon. The amber wooden walls mixed with country style blue and white tablecloths are a cute match to the pink checkered linen napkins. Threading the comfy home theme deeper are walls covered with eye catching artwork of the owners son.
A few subtle hints of the restaurant’s fame and glamour include the Tina Turner signed jukebox and Roger Federer autographed wall.
When to Go
Open for dinner only and closed 3 months for summer, as the family takes a holiday escape to Ireland.
