Europaallee has recently been introducing new restaurants, one of which is Piu Ristorante Bar, a Napoli-style Italian restaurant, which provides a mix between a high-class and low-key dining experience. The restaurant’s focus on one particular region of Italian cuisine is new for Zurich and a huge success already! Since opening its doors in December 2015, Piu is already a favorite for business lunch, casual dinners, and an afternoon coffee and pastry after work!
As soon as you enter the restaurant, you will notice the unique combination of modern seating and tables paired together with telephones and posters from the 1990s. The large windows that look out into the city allow for natural lighting, making it a perfect lunch spot even in the warmer months! The seating is a bit unusual, as there are tables of all different shapes and sizes. If you want a table just for two (whether it be for lunch or dinner), definitely make a reservation to guarantee a smaller table.
The atmosphere in the restaurant during lunch and dinner is very different. At lunch you’ll be surrounded by men in suits and women in business attire as they grab something to eat together while simultaneously having a meeting, so it’s highly recommended to book ahead if you plan to get some food with more than two people.
By dinner the restaurant quiets down a bit, especially since you won’t see people rushing to and from work outside! The dining experience tends to be more slow-paced (in a good way) than at lunch because people have more time on their hands. Either way, the high ceilings and beautiful décor make the restaurant the place to be for multiple occasions!
Unlike most of the Italian restaurants we are all too familiar with in Zurich, Piu serves Italian cuisine with a twist – it focuses on Napoli-style food. Don’t be surprised when your pizza tastes more “doughy” than the usual crispy base we all know and love, as this is what Napoli pizza is known for! Instead of buffalo mozzarella, the pizza is topped with fior di latte, a different variation of mozzarella that brings a cheesy and strong flavor unlike anything we have tried.
If you are not into pizza or want to try something else, the restaurant serves pasta with delicious homemade sauces, different selections of meats and fish, and of course antipasti and salads. The restaurant also has a specialty menu, which changes based on what is in season at the moment; so after you have tried the staple menu, definitely see what specialties the chefs have come up with!
Piu is also a great location for an afternoon coffee and treat, as they serve some of the best cannoli’s we have been able to find in town, and so many fantastic flavor variations. Italian desserts like gelati and panna cotta are also a must-try.
Why we love it
The refreshing and intriguing take on Italian cuisine is a one-of-a-kind in Zurich. The restaurant clearly put a lot of thought and effort into the entire dining experience, including the interior designing, the location, and the presentation of the food!
Zuri Girl Tip
If you have a bit of extra time during the lunch hours, we definitely recommend grabbing some lunch at around 13:30, when most people already have to go back to work and the place is much less crowded. You will also probably get a table at that time without a reservation.
