An adorable village nestled between majestic mountains, Leukerbad is flowing with therapeutic thermal pools and welcoming you to a relaxing, rejuvenating weekend getaway 365 sunny days a year.
Via SBB, it’s about a 3 hour train ride from Zurich, with 3.9million liters of 51°C water gushing to the surface every day to fill the town’s 30 pools. Due to the thermal waters’ calcium, sodium, strongium, iron and fluoride content, sufferers of joint, muscle, arthritic, exhaustion, digestion and various health complaints have been pilgrimaging to Leukerbad for centuries.
Zuri Girl Tip: To learn more about thermal waters, follow The Thermal Springs Walkway taking you 600 meters through the Dala Gorge and crossing a 21-meter suspension bridge.
Zuri Girl checked into the 5-star Les Sources des Alpes, a charming French inspired boutique hotel with a nostalgic wood burning fireplace bar, 300+ wine cellar stocked primarily with local Valais region wines and an extensive wellness center.
Zuri Girl Tip: The outdoor thermal pool may be privately reserved for couples…and of course they’ll surround it with candles & champagne for a truly romantic experience.
We adored the casual chalet inside the Dela Croix-Federale Walliserkanne Restaurant with its wood-burning pizza oven, steak served on a hot stone and bubbling fondue dipped with pears. Zuri Girl also loved, loved, loved the nicely sized portion desserts at the Les Sources des Alpes. The chocolate-kalamansi orange tort and the pear compote were sensational…we almost went back the 2nd night for more!
Zuri Girl Tip: Besides raclette from the Valais Region, look for the local Eringer Beef, the breed of cattle made famous via the local Cow Fighting Events.
Do – Thermal Baths
As a trip away from the kids was our mission, the Walliser Alpentherme & Spa won our hearts. You could easily spend 2 to 3 days just in this Bath as you have the Valais Sauna Village and the Roman-Irish Baths plus the pools to choose from.
The Roman-Irish Baths are a reservation only, nude bathing area guiding you on a journey through 11 stations including sauna, steam baths and thermal pools. A 2-hour uber relaxing and energizing experience taking you from a 48°C Caldarium Steam Bath to a 12°C Frigadarium.
The Valasisian Sauna Village is so adorable you almost forget you are supposed to be relaxing. Built from local building materials and weathered timber, it’s a little Swiss village of Saunas and bathing experiences.
Unless spending the entire day with a break for lunch, we’d recommend splitting these up into 2 days and focusing on 1 each day BUT do not miss the outdoor swimming pool at sunset. Under the moonlit sky, gazing at the mountains, you’ll float in a sea of therapeutic bubbles. It’s simply stunning!
Zuri Girl Tip: If the kids are with you, opt for the Leukerbad Therme. It has a cool outdoor pool with giant slide plus indoor play areas and is known for catering to families.
Do – Mountain Fun.
With 2 cable cars ascending to Torrent and Gemmi (2,350 meters), you’ll discover the wonders of winter fun like snowboarding, cross-country skiing, coasting slides and about 50 kilometers of ski slopes.
From April to October, over 300 kilometers of mountain landscape await your walking shoes, monster scooters and mountain bikes.
Not to Miss
Check the Thermal Bath Calendars for themed events like: Moonlight Candlelit Bathing, Aqua Mystica and Champagne Breakfast.
Try one of The Walliser Alpentherme & Spa body treatments using local ingredients. The “Enjoy the Best of the Valais Alps” caught our eye. It’s described as using Alpine herbs which have antispasmodic properties and improve circulation; creamy goat butter to nourish the skin, hay flowers to stimulate metabolism; grapeseed to boost the immune system and revitalizes the body and honey and swiss pine which lower blood pressure and restore balance to the body.
