DesignInspiration1Decorating your home can be lots of fun… but it can also become a little stressful and overwhelming with all those choices and decisions that need to be made!

Home is where we should be able to relax and rejuvenate – it should be a place we love coming home to after a long day. Although we may not realize it, aspects of interior design such as space planning, colors, and lighting all greatly influence how you feel in your own home.

If you’re looking for some guidance and inspiration (without breaking the bank), then you’ll love this Interior Design Workshop offered by interior design studio Global Inspirations Design. Whether you’ve just moved in or whether you’ve lived in the same place for 10 years, there’s always room to re-think and re-design. The workshop is set up to accommodate a range of skill levels, from teenagers who have never designed a thing to jet-setters who have lived in 7+ homes in their adult life. Zuri Girl went behind the scenes to get the inside scoop and attended one of these small-group workshops run by company founder and interior design expert Simone Aïda Baur.

Interior Design Fundamentals

There are many interesting fundamentals covered in the course from different decorating styles to textures to use of colors and color psychology to functionality of the room. One great example was that, since we have long winters and many gray days here in Zurich, we may want to pick a warmer color theme to help bring warmth to our homes and keep out that cold winter feeling! All of these elements play a role in the look and feel of a room but equally important is how all of these elements come together to form one overall home experience. Simone shows participants how to finely balance all of these complex pieces. Even those participants who knew some of the basics of interior design seemed to get a lot of new insights and tips (we could actually hear the “ah-ha”s all around).

The Concept Board

While the first half of the workshop was a lot of interactive learning and theory, the second half is where the fun really begins! Here is the chance for everyone to get their hands dirty and start applying their new knowledge. Creativity really comes out during this phase when each participant develops their own Design Concept Board. Each participant looks through dozens of magazines to find images or words that “speak” to their 3 key design focus words. Simone is of course there to answer questions, give suggestions, and share her experience. Participants then glue their final selections onto their concept board and they can take it home with them as inspiration and to help plan for their personal project.

So if you want to re-decorate a room, or a whole apartment, or even just take a course that’s sure to get your creative energies flowing, then this Interior Design Workshop is for you. The next workshop in Zurich will be held on Sunday, 26 April 2015.

Zuri Girl Insider Tip: Global Inspirations Design also offers personalized interior design coaching and full interior design services for those who want more personalized assistance with their design dilemmas.
