She helps you explore Switzerland via a delicous route.
Since moving to Switzerland in 2012, Heddi Nieuwsma developed a passion for exploring the country one bite at a time. She is passionate about immersing herself into Swiss recipes and her blog Cuisine Helvetica is her way to share her experiences with the world, where you are also invited to enjoy these recipes at home.
GG: What, or who, inspired you to create your blog?
Heddi Nieuwsma: My love of food, cooking and writing inspired me to start my blog, as well as an intense curiosity to learn about the cuisine and culture of Switzerland.
GG: Tell us about your latest projects…what are you working on at the moment?
Heddi Nieuwsma: This summer, I have been developing and sharing recipes as part of the Migros #Grillitarier campaign. Also, I will be doing some traveling in the coming months in Graubünden and Appenzell in search of Swiss regional dishes and ingredients.
GG: Tell us something most people don’t know about you?
Heddi Nieuwsma: I am left-handed. Although I only write with my left hand—everything else I do with my right hand, whether using a scissors, crocheting or playing sports.
GG: How do you spend your day?
Heddi Nieuwsma: Cooking, writing, reading, studying French and spending time with my family, along with some form of exercise—usually running, but also hiking or yoga.
GG: Tell us about you out on the town…any favorite restaurants or boutiques that we should check out?
Heddi Nieuwsma: I am rarely out on the town these days, but in the city of Neuchâtel, I like to grab a beer at Café du Cerf or have a renversée or herbal tea at Okapi Coffee. There is also new rooftop bar in town at the Hotel Beaulac called Waves that I have been wanting to try.
GG: Favorite restaurant/cafe in Zurich?
Heddi Nieuwsma: When I am in Zurich, I almost always end up at Hiltl. You can count on this restaurant for good, fresh food.
GG: How do you keep organized?
Heddi Nieuwsma: I have many, many to do lists. And, I don’t consider myself a very organized person!
GG: What is your favorite inspirational quote?
Heddi Nieuwsma: I don’t have an inspirational quote, but I probably should find one…
GG: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Heddi Nieuwsma: Will let you know if I think of something!
