Discreetly hidden, in calm valley in the midst of the Bernease Alps lies Gstaad, one Switzerland’s swankiest ski resorts. It is for obvious reasons that this adorable village has established itself as a meeting point for the international jet set.
The adorable village consists of wooden houses which are characteristic for the architecture of this region and host restaurants and luxury stores. Whilst small, the lovely village center offers a great variety of excellent restaurants, some of them gault-millau starred.
Approximately a 3-hour train ride from Zurich with departures every 90-minutes, Gstaad is a fun & easy weekend getaway!
WHAT TO DO
The area offers many opportunities for winter sports. The large ski resort around Schönried and Saanenmöser offer a great variety of slopes for families, beginners and those with practice. If you are not a skier, take a hike and have lunch in one of the many cozy mountain restaurants.
On a day that’s just too chilly, head to Gstaad Palace’s spa for pampering. The spa features a hamam and a high-end selection of treatments and you might spot a celebrity in a towel. Zuri Girl loves soaking in the outdoor pool in the dead-cold of winter with snow-capped mountains and then reading fireside in the lounge.
WHERE TO EAT
Gstaad is a paradise for foodies and we have listed a few of Zuri Girl’s favorite places:
Great Cuisine with a View
Sonnenhof: Situated in Saanen, above Gstaad this cozy, rustic little restaurant offers a fantastic view and Swiss cuisine. The quality of the food is good and service is pleasant and attentive.
Ask for a table by the window and marvel the view.
A Real Insider
Tucked away in a tiny alley in Saanen’s village center, 16 Bar and Restaurant, which opened two years ago is still a local secret tip. The beautifully refurbished farmhouse now hosts an adorable dining room and bar and offers sophisticated cuisine and a menu which changes daily.
Bring cash as the restaurant does not accept any plastic.
The Asian Option
Blun Chi, Gstaad’s only Chinese restaurant offers a good alternative if you would like a break from Swiss cuisine.
BARS & CLUBS
Head to the Gstaad Palace for a sundowner in this elegant setting complete with a fireplace. Mingle with the jet set and indulge in the large selection of cocktails.
If there is energy for more the hotel also houses Gstaad’s coolest clubs, Greengo.
