Three decades of self-portraits made especially for Parkett Publishers, on exhibition from 22 February – 18 July 2020.
In this retrospective, the ninety portraits exhibited were made especially for Parkett in since 1984. The 270 artists from around the world have pushed the boundaries of portraiture and self-portraiture.
The artists included in this exhibition employ a wide array of techniques, media, and methods, including printmaking, photography, collage, and sculpture, among others. Works on view range from portraits by Andy Warhol, Marlene Dumas, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, to self-portraits by Martin Kippenberger, Gillian Wearing, Kerstin Brätsch, and Ed Atkins. Also on view are non-traditional, symbolic and indirect portraits including among others a small-scale sculptural sound work by Laurie Anderson, Douglas Gordon’s bite into a sheet of plain white paper, and Rirkrit Tiravanija’s edition of the artist’s own Ray Ban glasses with engraved poetic phrases. Through the use of both traditional and conceptual representation, the works explore the subjective, emotional, physical, or political identities of their subjects.
