Since 1703, Mount Gay has been producing rum of the highest quality on the island of Barbados. As the easternmost island in the Caribbean, the constant wind, sea and rich soil result in a unique terroir that is formed almost entirely out of coral, unlike the volcanic neighbors surrounding the island. This perfect balance of the elements has allowed for an ideal situation to cultivate sugar cane, the basis of rum. Since the 16th century, this has been the island’s largest economic source of income and the Mount Gay estate is recognized as the world’s oldest and most authentic.
As a tribute to its long history, the traditional company is presenting a new edition of its two top brands, Mount Gay Black Barrel and Mount Gay XO. We had the opportunity to enjoy the Mount Gay XO – personally crafted by Master Blender Trudiann Branker who carefully combined the unique flavors of rich and mellow rums that have matured in American whiskey, Bourbon and Cognac casks. The small batch reserve blend is smooth, round and complex with delicious flavors of burnt caramel…best enjoyed neat or on ice.
