She brings to life a brand that is focused on comfort, elegance…and a hint of rebellion.
Inspired by her mothers passion for fashion, Claudia Güdel has the confidence to believe in her vision and complete what she sets out to do. Her designs are for both men and women, giving her customers the elegance they deserve, with a hint of rebellion that is found within everyone. She designs clothing with her customer in mind, allowing them to mingle or stand out in a crowd depending on their mood.
We caught up with Claudia to see what makes her tick…
GG: What, or who, inspired you to enter the field of work you are in now?
Claudia Güdel: My mother had a big passion for fabrics and clothes. When she had an idea in her mind she worked day and night until it had the shape she desired. This passion and fulfillment definitely jumped over to me. Later on, during my fashion design studies, I watched a documentary about Issey Miyake. I was very fascinated by his artistic research approach towards clothes.
GG: Tell us about your latest projects…what are you working on at the moment?
Claudia Güdel : I was given the opportunity to design the clothing concepts for two beautiful hotels in Basel: Hotel Krafft and Hotel Nomad. In close collaboration with the staff and with the director we came up with a small selection of design elements that can be combined individually. Cleaning personal and direction use some of the same elements but in slightly different combinations. I am pretty proud of the outcome!
I am also working on my next catalog with the great visual designer Jiri Oplatek form „Claudia Basel“ and with fantastic images by photographer Mark Niedermann. It is inspiring to work on my designs together with these professionals. Their points of view give new inputs and open new horizons.
I am also redesigning my store in Zurich for it’s relaunch in February 2018!
GG: Tell us something most people don’t know about you?
Claudia Güdel: Recently I moved to a new flat in Basel and I have to admit that I love to finally have central heating and a dishwasher!
GG: What are some favorite beauty products you cannot live without?
Claudia Güdel: I love the fragrance „Eau de Protection” form Etat Libre d’Orange, Paris.
GG: Tell us about you out on the town…any favorite restaurants or boutiques that we should check out?
Claudia Güdel: Basel is my home town now and I love to go out with my husband to meet with our friends. My atelier is based in Kleinbasel and this is where I spend most of my time ending the day with a good meal at Gatto Nero, La Fourchette or Goldenes Fass and sometimes with an Old Fashioned at Renée.
GG: Favorite restaurant/cafe in Zurich?
Claudia Güdel: I am very happy for having John Baker in the neighborhood at Helvetiaplatz and I love the food at Kobal on Kanzleistrasse. The restaurant Italia is a classic and always delicious.
GG: How do you keep organized?
Claudia Güdel: Uff! I’m an excel freak. The grid structure helps me quite often. I also carry a book with me for sketches, notes and to-do lists. And I have my smart phone organizer. I just need order around me to calm the chaos in my head.
GG: What is your favorite inspirational quote?
Claudia Güdel: a graffiti from Banksy: „Keep your coins, I want change“
GG: Favorite blogger to follow: food/fashion/news?
Claudia Güdel : It’s a bit embarrassing – but I am hardly ever on social media, this is still on my ToDo list. I like NZZ Folio though!
GG: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Claudia Güdel: I would do it all over again, the exactly same way.
