Chocolate Shops in Zurich

GG Zurich posted on February 14, 2017

Chocolate: the reason why we all moved to Switzerland, right? Well, even if it wasn’t the sole purpose, delicious Swiss chocolate is certainly a wonderful perk of living here. We knew we landed in chocolate heaven when Swiss Air handed us a mini chocolate bar on our flight. Swiss life got even better when we discovered that every grocery store dedicates a full aisle to chocolate bar varieties. And after more time living in the land of chocolate, we stumbled upon the real treasure: Swiss chocolate shops.

Some chocolate shops are easily noticed to residents and tourists alike, and others are hidden on the cobblestone streets of old town, yet both types are not to be missed. We want our Zuri Girls to make the most educated decision when it comes to buying chocolate, so we’ve compiled a list of chocolate shops to get you started on your chocolate tasting journey and even included a self guided walking map.

Enjoy gals!

So Frisch. So Fresh. Bricks of fresh chocolate line the window of Laderach stores, which makes it hard to not stop and stare. Go in and order as many grams of chocolate as you’d like, in any of the 20+ flavors. Corn flakes, blackberry, chili lime, pink pepper…you name the topping and they probably have it. Because of its popularity, you can find Laderach throughout Switzerland and a few other countries.

A Zurich Landmark. Sprungli is hard to miss, with its 2-story location at Paradeplatz. They are best known for their Luxembergli’s, a smaller version of the French macaron. Don’t be too distracted by the colorful flavors though…the chocolates are equally as delicious…you can order as little as 1 or 2 if you just need a pick me up while strolling through town. We crave the Dunkle Truffes du Jour (dark truffle of the day)

Can’t Miss the Colors. Upon first glance of the colorful decorations and ivy throughout the store, you realize you are entering a fairytale chocolate shop. They sell beautifully packaged chocolates, sometimes even hidden in the belly of Santa. But really, everyone needs to have a taste of the champagne truffles. Chocolates with bubbly? A Zuri Girl’s dream!

Old Town’s Hideaway. Strolling through Niederdorf’s cobblestone alleys, you may stumble upon this hidden gem. Aeschbach is known for the beautifully handmade packaging, dedicated to each season and holiday. You might even notice the store clerk tying bows behind the counter! Be sure to try their kirsch (cherry liqueur)-filled chocolates, which are still in their original 1970’s packaging.

Say Chocolate

Personalized Chocolate Messages. The newest addition to the Zurich chocolate scene can be found at Europallee. Have something to say to a loved one? Say it with chocolate! They can spell out whatever you please with custom letters printed onto square chocolate pralines.

Since 1905. This tea room and chocolate shop boasts a wide variety of classic pralines and truffles. They have a few specialties, but our personal favorite is the Lotti’s Best, with bits of gold dust on top and reminiscent of a Butterfinger candy bar. If you have room for more chocolate, be sure to try their hot chocolate; it’s dark, creamy and so delicious!

Locally Handmade. An unforgettable journey through the land of high-end, hand crafted Swiss chocolate made from 100% natural ingredients. We love the opportunity to sample various bites, the highly educated & friendly staff to help with selecting, the seasonal flavors like elderflower infusions in July and the Zurich souvenir gift boxes.

PS. We also are drooling to check out Vollenweider Chocolate near the Opernhaus.
