We are addicted to the newest entertainment – of the gastronomic delights – to hit Zurich’s Langstrasse.
Cafe New Zealand began serving up their soon-to-be-famous Flat White since April 2015 and this beautiful coffee experience is worth going out of your way for.
Owner Sam happened to be traveling through Zurich and decided to stay. Cafe New Zealand is his gift to our city.
Thank you Sam!
The ground floor of the Langstars Backpackers Hostel is a cafe by day and bar at night. The tiki god in the window protects the place and the Māori mural on the wall adds excitement to the already buzzing neighborhood. The place is open, airy and incredibly comfortable to sit back and catch up with friends…and make new friends…over a smooth coffee and free wifi.
Come for the coffee…stay for the Pies. We tried the Steak & Guinness Pie, recommended by the owner as a true ‘Man’s Pie’ since we were taking it home to share with the hubby. All pies are made locally – and a selection of them are made by a Kiwi. Options range from Vegetarian (lentils, sweet potato, carrots, zucchini) to Beef Bourguignon (beef, carmelized onions, rosemary, bacon & mushroom). Enjoy there…or ask for it cold to go. The bacon and cheese muffin looked pretty darn tasty too.
There’s coffee, then there’s THIS coffee. We have a hard time using the “c” word, as the Flat White at Cafe New Zealand is so gorgeous…it’s difficult to refer to it with such a boorish name.
This is the only thing you need to be ordering…but yeah, sure, there’s other drinks on the menu…like Zurich’s tastiest Chai-Latte and they even have L&P (Lemon & Paeroa) in the cooler available to bring back any New Zealander’s fond childhood memories.
Why we LOVE it
This is definitely not a hipster cafe – but for anyone (hipster’s included) looking for an orgasmic coffee experience – coincidently found on Zurich’s Langstrasse – this is the place.
They also popped our cherry with our first Flat White experience. What’s a Flat White, you ask? At Cafe New Zealand, it’s a double shot of the most smooth espresso blended with Switzerland’s famous whole milk. Somehow the combination creates a smooth and velvety texture in your mouth…worth every memorable sip.
Zuri Girl Tip
First visit to Cafe New Zealand? Go ahead and order yourself a Flat White and sit down in the cafe – or in the secret garden in the back. This experience simply cannot be replicated via take-away.
