Just 1 hour from Zurich, let’s escape to Basel for a cultural getaway and when traveling on a budget, Hotel Wettstein caught our eye. Centrally located in a quiet residential neighborhood, the property was renovated in 2015 and has a very inviting garden discreetly tucked away behind the hotel.
As they say – the early bird always gets the worm – and at Hotel Wettingen it pays to show up early for the very well-appointed breakfast buffet which is a highlight at this property. Flaky croissants, smoked salmon, boiled eggs and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables welcome you to start your morning feeling nourished and fully energized to explore this cultural capital of Switzerland. Have a good look at the garden fountain adorned with a Basilisk, the heraldic animal of Basel.
What was once an undesirable section of the city is now a very vibrant district along the Rhine, where it is a summer ritual for the community to commute down the river on warm sunny days. You will see Baselers toting their waterproof wickelfisch around the city, especially during the after-work rush. This waterproof swimming bag is a cult accessory that everyone from suit-donning professionals to sunbathing beachbums never leave home without. You will see the river current moves quickly, therefore, swimming with young children is not recommended. After your refreshing experience, stop for a beer at one of the cheerful summer bars along the water, Ufer7 is a popular favorite just next to Mittleren Brücke.
Within an hour you can circle the entire city going 20 kilometers per hour by eBike. Take your time and soak it all in…there are 2 eBikes and 2 manual bikes available for hotel guests and they are first-come-first-serve. If you have never enjoyed an eBike before, the ease of going uphill is something to be experienced firsthand. We effortlessly pedaled our way around the city to get our lay of the land, but you can easily stop at museums and galleries along the way. The city is designed to accommodate bicycles, with dedicated lanes and smooth pavement…just be careful at intersections where there are multiple trams crossing.
There’s always a good feeling when you walk into a room that is clean, comfortable and just what you need to rest and refresh while exploring a city. The rooms at Hotel Wettingen offer exactly this and a special something to make your stay complete….a sweet treat from Läckerli Huus: the Basler Läckerli Riccolo.
Once 2 hotels, the Palazzo & Wettstein until it was renovated in 2015, this property generally welcomes business clients, the covid situation has changed the dynamic and we find it to be perfectly situated within walking distance to Museum Tinguely and the Rhine…which is the ideal location to begin your Rhineschwimmen! Should you need parking, there are a few spots in the garage below for CHF 25, or blue-zone parking near the property for 5 francs less. The hotel is rated as 3-star superior, but we find this to be underrated, as the gym with high-quality Technogym equipement and lovely children’s playroom make this a very attractive option for a getaway to Basel. Also, if traveling with children, you’ll see in the photo above the built-in 3rd bed that folds discreetly into the wall which is an excellent option for families who need space during the day and that extra mattress for little ones to count their sheep at bedtime.
Summer 2020 brings us a special offer at Hotel Wettstein, as they are generously giving us 3 nights for the price of 2 with the promotional code “MehrFerien”. Simply enter this code at checkout and enjoy your getway!
The overnight accommodation was graciously provided by Swiss Hospitality Collection and Hotel Wettstein Basel allowing us to highlight the wonderful advantages the city of Basel has for Zurich residents to visit overnight for a cultural getaway just one hour from Zurich.
