A Pure-fect Routine for Anti-Aging

The obsession with – what is HER morning routine? – is so yesterday. We want to know, what is her SKINCARE routine?

Behind every smooth and glowing complexion is not just the woman wearing it confidently, but the aesthetician who manages it. Allow us to let you in on a little secret…luxury skincare is not only affordable, but it will make you feel like a goddess right from the start.

We asked Georgina Axis, founder of Pure Beauty Spa, to wipe the cabinets clean and provide a top-notch skincare routine for exhausted ladies in their 30’s & 40’s. The conversation went a little something like this:

GG: Should we incorporate some glycolic acids and retinols
Georgina: Vitamin A is the ultimate ingredient for healthy skin, it is so incredible that it actually improves skin cell function and makes older cells behave in a more youthful way. It improves all skin conditions. Everyone over say 25 or 28, depending on lifestyle and skin condition should start to incorporate it into their routine. It happens to be the only fda ingredient (along with spf) to scientifically reverse the signs of ageing.

Acids are a really great way to exfoliate the skin but there are many different kinds and you should get advice as to which is better for your skin concerns.

GG: What again is the difference between dry and dehydrated
Georgina: Dry skin lacks oil or lipids and is a skin type whereas dehydrated skin is a skin condition that occurs when there is a lack of water in the skin. Dehydrated skin can happen to anyone.  For example, you can have dehydrated skin and still have an oily or combination skin type.

GG: Age spots…can we talk about those?
Georgina: There is definitely hope! Ingredients in skincare such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, acids and of course not skipping spf (ever) especially if you have age (sun) spot issues. Professional treatments such as laser, microneedling, LED, and chemical peels can help to fade areas too.

GG: Help us avoid looking like those ladies who have a 10-year age gap between the chin and the neck.
Georgina: Its true that the neck is often an abandoned area, the face getting all the attention. A simple way of looking after your neck is by taking your usual facial products all the way down to include your décolleté, or you can use a dedicated neck cream, but this is not an absolute necessity.  Do not forget your spf!  Daily self massage can also help as well as professional treatments mentioned above.

GG: Eye cream…is it really necessary?
Georgina: The eye area is much more sensitive and the skin is thinner in this area so heavy moisturisers are not advisable but taking your serum around your eye area can be ok, depending on what it is. If your product says avoid eye area though, then avoid!! Though, an eye cream is not an essential though by any means.

GG: Can we keep our homemade, natural cleanser with Aloe, Rosewater and essential oils?
Georgina: Um, that’s sweet, but no. A proper cleanser is a game changer. Just because its ‘natural’ doesn’t mean its better! Essential oils can cause significant irritation depending on the oil and the concentration, not to mention the photo toxic burns that are also possible when they react with the sun on skin. Best to use a dedicated cleanser that was made for the job.I love an oil or balm as a first cleanse followed by a treatment cleanser at night and one cleanse in the morning (whatever you love) is sufficient since you are usually not removing spf (a daily essential, whatever the weather or time of year) and makeup.

With that, the order was placed and the package swiftly delivered via Swiss Post. With the new skincare routine in place for a few weeks, here is what we have to report:

Cleanser:

ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm
No wonder this is an award winning cleanser all around the globe. It is truly the Queen of Cleansers. Once experienced, there is no going back to foaming face-wash or a lazy skip of the ol’ routine. A pleasant surprise was the luxury face cloth included within the package, just rough enough to gently exfoliate your deeply cleansed skin. There is a technique to properly washing your face…massage the creamy balm onto dry skin until it becomes an oil (oh yes, that smells heavenly and feels decadent), wet your fingers and work it in until it emulsifies, remove with the warm cloth, splash cold water to close your deeply cleansed pores. This, ladies, is a life-long ritual that we promise you are going to agree with Georgina…it’s a game changer.

Antioxidant:

NeoStrata Antioxidant Defense Serum
This serum is what we like to call an invisible ghost-buster…the ghosts are those pesky little free radicals that create oxidative damage, further sun damage and the worsening of pigmentation. It is essentially a shield of protection underneath your moisturizer and sunscreen that karate chops those micro particles from entering skin layers which feel harmless because we cannot see them, but with time our reflection without an antioxidant serum will wish you started sooner. This is one of those products you do not see immediate results, but you know it’s working and for that reason, it is suggested as part of our Pure-fect routine for Anti-Aging. Besides, if Georgina and the Skincare Queen herself, Caroline Hirons, recommends it…it’s in the bag.

Sunscreen:

Heliocare 360º gel oil-free (tinted)
While searching for a lightweight tinted sunscreen that does not leave a greasy shine, we discovered Heliocare 360º and find it superior to anything we tried in the past. Did you know that in order to get the full level of protection stated on the packaging you need to apply 2mg of product per cm2 of skin – which equates to roughly a finger length of product for the face and applying less than this hugely affects the SPF protection that you’re getting! With 3 tints to choose from, alongside the full product range available at Pure Beauty Spa, we found our match with “bronze” and enjoy this as part of our morning skincare routine.

Exfoliation:

NeoStrata Smooth Surface Daily Peel Pads
The unboxing ritual that belongs to this product is nearly as exciting as the luxury face cloth that accompanied the Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm mentioned above. There are two items included within the box, one bottle of Glycolic Acid solution that needs to be opened and poured over the jar of 36 daily pads to ensure freshness. With regular use, this exfoliating product used after cleansing the skin is quite comfortable. There is no stinging, yet you can feel the peel solution working with a slight tingle and the next morning skin has a noticeable glow. It’s super simple to incorporate and yes, we’re hooked!

NeoStrata Retinol + NAG Complex
Retinol is the true secret to anti-aging and this product from NeoStrata contains NeoGlucosamine to reduce discoloration and redness as you introduce it slowly into your skincare regime. A derivative of vitamin A, retinol reduces the appearance of fine lines because it strengthens the skin from within by aiding in the production of collagen and encouraging cells to turn over faster. Furthermore, it helps make pores appear smaller (a cold water splash after cleansing also helps). Just a pea-sized amount every 2-3 nights is enough to get your skin used to this potent product. Evenings when retinol is not applied, the Daily Peel Pads are used to maintain the routine of daily exfoliation.

Extend:

NeoStrata Triple Firming Neck Cream
Beyond the face, we must take care of the delicate skin on our neck and décolleté without simply extending moisturizers into this region. It is better to have a dedicated product recommended for this sensitive area because you do not want emollient products to settle into the creases of the neck and you also want targeted ingredients to serve your needs. Similar to the retinol product mentioned above, the ingredient NeoGlucosamine is the building block of the skin’s natural Hyaluronic Acid and helps reduce the appearance of discoloration while also promoting a firm skin texture. Just one pump from the bottle morning and evening will encourage graceful aging.
