5 Home Decorating Tips

Zuri Girl knows the dilemma. How in the world can this white-walled apartment become a dream home without breaking the bank and ending up with ridiculously gorgeous yet absolutely uncomfortable decorative pillows???

Not to fear ladies…we turned to Simone Aïda Baur, an Interior Design Specialist, and asked for 5 Simple, yet Effective Tips for Home Decorating. Here’s what she shared…

Good luck ladies!

Tip 1: How to Decorate Using Every Day Items

Take a look at what’s inside your cupboards and you may be surprised at how many items you will find, which can be used for decorating. Think trays, containers, vases, bowls etc. They may be in wood, glass, metal or ceramic and will add colour, texture and dimension. You can use them to place flowers, potpourri, candles, decorative balls, candy and more. You can also create clusters, for instance glass vases in different shapes and sizes. You will be surprised what you can do with what you’ve got! Be creative and think outside of the box.

Tip 2: How to Quickly Change the Look of a Room

Look at your accessories, such as cushions, candles and other decorative items. These can be easily exchanged or why not simply change their colour. For instance, you can change the cushion covers (new colour or different pattern), (spray) paint some accessories or even small pieces of furniture. For a harmonious scheme, colour coordinate your accessories (candles, cushions etc.). For an eclectic look, mix and match colours and patterns. You will create an instant new look, without breaking the bank!

Tip 3: How to Use and Combine Colours

Most people like colour, yet many are afraid to use it, because they feel unsure about how to colour match things. Different materials and their texture reflect light differently, which can completely change the colour. In addition to that colours look differently in different environments (daylight versus artificial light), which is why it is essential to always colour match all items. Get samples and match them against your floors, curtains, sofa etc. before selecting your colour, in particular when painting the walls.

Tip 3

Tip 4: How to Mix Styles

Most of us like more than one style, however, be aware of which style you like to look at versus which style you like to live in as they may not be the same. When mixing styles, have one dominant style and then add accents and accessories from another style in order to keep a cohesive look.

Tip 4

Tip 5: How to Avoid Pitfalls

As with everything else, doing things right, takes time, which is why it’s important to think things through. Create a concept for your home, before you head out buying new stuff, which then, more often than not, doesn’t match what you’ve already got! Maybe it’s the wrong colour, the wrong size or the wrong style! These are indeed the most common mistakes people make and costly ones at that… So think about your concept, your colours, your style, the lighting and the purpose of the room before you purchase anything. It’s a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun. If you don’t have the time or that doesn’t sound like your kind of fun, then hire professional help. After all, that is what we are trained to do.
