Birdhaus: A Social Club for Women

posted on | updated on | by Zuri Girl

We wanted to sing about Birdhaus long before their opening, as we had a birds-eye view of their development, launch party and weekly events…it just took us ages before we could visit the space ourselves! We are so in love with Birdhaus and here are just a few of the many reasons we suggest you fly out of the cage and join the club!

The Concept

More than a co-working space, Birdhaus is a social club dedicated exclusively to women. Here, international ladies from different industries and backgrounds come together to share common interests, while bonding over community events. Members can look forward to weekly yoga classes, meditations, a book club sponsored by Orell Füssli and so much more.

Here you are welcome to choose either to relax curled up in one of the arched windows upstairs with a good book off the bookshelf, or work intensely on your passion project while surrounded by like-minded and creative women all around you.

The Location

Just steps away from the Google campus in the Hürlimann Areal, the debut Birdhaus location is perched on a hilltop with their welcoming open space located on 2 levels overlooking the trees. We find there is something very symbolic about the design of the levels, as there are serious co-working collaborations happening downstairs around the gorgeous straight-edged tables (more on those later), and upstairs there are cozy round tables and carpeting for all embracing community events. With floor-to-ceiling windows lining the entrance, the loft space is bright and inspirational.

The Design

Sleek. Modern. Feminine. Timeless…these are all the words that come to mind when you enter Birdhaus. Designed by Carina Kümmeke of Upscale Interior Design with a goal to create a space filled with “creative inspiration combined with absolute functionality” the Scandinavian furniture is accented with beautiful plush velvets and colors in variations of pink and teal, black and white. The worktables are incredibly unique, custom-designed exclusively by Studio Sundaze a Swiss based company inspired by the surf culture in California. The tables are made out of the same material as surfboards…super smooth and great for writing.

The Community

Looking beyond the beautiful swans, it’s the unmistakeable swallows hand-drawn by designer Sonja Zagermann that are a symbol letting you know you have found a home here in this space.

The community of women who come together at Birdhaus can look forward to member-only events such as Yoga Wednesdays led by Yogaholics United, Meditation Fridays and many other unique events such as plant workshops or chocolate tastings. The open kitchen is designed to be as waste-free as possible in collaboration with Zero Waste Shop, breakfast by James Jar & Co. and lunch options conveniently delivered by Roots.

The Founder

There is something to be said about California dreamin’ as this Cali girl landed in Zurich and within less than a year she was building her brand. Michelle Gasparovic is fun loving, light spirited, incredibly energetic and passionately working around the clock to ensure women in Zurich have a place to focus on their goals in this magical setting. Since moving to Zurich, she met so many women that made her feel at home and Birdhaus is dedicated not only to them, but also for all the “dreamers, makers, creatives, bosses and future bosses.”

As of May 2019 Michelle announced she is moving back to California. She truly was an angel for women in Zurich, swooping in to create this heavenly space before she was off to the next life project. Best wishes Michelle!

The NEW Owner

Ana Paula Tediosi was born in Brazil and grew up in Bellinzona, Switzerland. She balances motherhood with 2 children, a career in the pharmaceutical industry, a calendar filled with presidential duties and volunteering engagements for the PWG, yes above all this, she casually introduces herself as “Ana, just Ana” while selflessly using her platform to highlight the women around her. Learn more about Ana via our interview with her here.
