The Big Sleep and The Best Years of Our Lives

Zuri Girl has recreated the magic of the movies by pairing classic motion pictures currently showing in Zürich with cocktails. This April, we’re featuring two films from the year 1946: The Big Sleep and The Best Years of Our Lives.

Cheers!

The Best Years of Our Lives and Goin’ Home Cocktails

The Classic Film: Addressing the problems facing veterans as they readjust to civilian life, The Best Years of Our Lives concentrates on the return of three servicemen to a fictional American town. Like many real-life soldiers, the film’s servicemen face a host of crises upon their return (unemployment, disillusion, and physical disablement) and quickly come to recognize that their lives have been forever altered by the war. Praised as a realistic portrait of American life in the aftermath of World War II, The Best Years of Our Lives was immensely successful at the box office and captured seven academy awards, including Best Picture of 1946. Today, it is on the American Film Institute’s (“AFI”) list of top 100 American films.

The Cocktail: Before heading out to see the film, you can pair The Best Years of Our Lives with ‘Goin’ Home’ cocktails. To make the drink, pour 1 ounce (30ml) gin, 1 ounce (30ml) peach schnapps, 1/2 ounce (15ml) dry vermouth, and 1/3 ounce (10ml) lime juice into a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into an old-fashioned glass filled halfway with broken ice. Add 1.5 ounces (45ml) sparkling apple juice or cider and serve.

The Big Sleep and a Shot of Death

The Classic Film: Known for its complex and confusing plot line, The Big Sleep follows a private investigator, Philip Marlowe, (Humphrey Bogart) who, in trailing a blackmail case, finds himself encased in an underworld of gambling, scandal, and murder. Along the way, Marlowe meets an enticing yet double-crossing divorcee (Lauren Bacall) who, like all femme fatales, isn’t afraid of a little danger. But if Marlowe isn’t careful, he might come across something even more risky than death…he might brush against love.

The Cocktail: Our apologies for the dark pairing, but since the film’s title is a euphemism for death, you can capture the intrigue and danger of The Big Sleep with a shot of ‘Death.’ To make a Death shot, pour 1/2 oz (15ml) white tequila into a shot glass and then very carefully pour 1/2 oz (15ml) black sambuca on top so that the finished drink is layered and striking: black on top and clear on the bottom.
