She is the woman behind Schminkbar. A renowned makeup artist who dreamed big and worked hard to achieve her goals. Today, Bea Petri is Founder of the nationally acclaimed “Schminkbar by Bea Petri”, the original wellness and beauty oasis that beautifully blurs the lines between beauty salon and gastronomy for a relaxing and welcoming experience, with 7 locations in Zurich and Winterthur. Recently, she debuted one of our favorite vegan nail polish lines – KURE BAZAAR – to Switzerland via all of her Schminkbar locations. When not leading her company into the next big project, she can be found spending time with her daughters Lia and Kim who also help manage the operations, as well as visiting the cosmetic school Nas Mode she built in West Africa. We caught up with Bea to learn a bit more about what makes her tick…
What, or who, inspired you to enter the field of work you are in now?
In my past life, I was a makeup artist for Swiss and International films, working day and night 7 days a week for 7-8 consecutive weeks…my life was constantly in a ‘jet-lag’ feeling. One day I was in New York making a movie and I experienced a sharp pain in my neck which led me to experience my first chair massage in a nail studio. I looked around and saw ladies enjoying manicures, pedicures, chair massage, brow waxing…all quick services with a cup of Starbucks coffee next to them. A few months later, I was in Bangkok at the Mandarin Oriental and experienced nail services where I was served tea and fresh fruits, the presentation was memorable.
All of a sudden, the light went on and I had the idea to bring this concept to Switzerland, mixing spa services with refreshments, but much nicer. I wanted a space which was big, open, loud, music playing, but also where people could talk to each other and have fun while feeling beautiful. Schminkbar on Beatengasse was opened in 2003 with only 8 people. Today the company employs 75.
Tell us something most people don’t know about you?
I was married 4 times, the last time 5 years ago. I am an interesting woman, a business woman and sometimes this is difficult on a relationship. I am also a grandmother of 3, with a 4th arriving June 2015.
In Autumn, a book will be published about my life story, including some beauty tips as well as my project in Africa.
One day, I wish to create my own cosmetic line with natural and organic ingredients for skincare.
Tell us about you out on the town…any favorite restaurants or boutiques that we should checkout?
My husband is a very good cook, so I love eating together at home. When in Zurich, my dear friend owns the Schüssel restaurant in Seefeld, so I enjoy going out to eat there. I also love the interior of Razzia, and of course summer dining at Fischers Fritz.
How do you keep organized?
I am a workaholic. I honestly have no hobbies or partake in sports and I am happy with that. Work is everything for me. My handy is my life, it is always attached to me, it keeps me organized and it keeps me going.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
You have to always be a good role-model for yourself and stay true to yourself and your goals. When I think back on some not so good times, I remember girlfriends would call and invite me to the cinema, but after declining the invitation so many times, the calls stop coming. Sure…there is a negative side to success, but when you are true to your goals, motivated by family, drive, strength and passion…you have everything you need to keep going.
