Foxtrail Zurich

foxtrailA fun family day outing to discover the city of Zurich!

We met up in the city on one of those half-day Wednesday afternoons that somehow feel like a holiday. We had a ticket for a Foxtrail, for the whole family. The whole unknown of it gave us a kind of fun flutter that you don’t normally feel marching through the HB on a weekday.

We had our instructions and our clues; we punched our ticket, called the phone number and reported in. First stop platform 41 any train 1st stop and . . . off we went. It was great.

We’re ‘locals’ (ok we’ve been here just a few years) we know the town, mostly, ha ha. What made it so nice were those surprise places we hadn’t ever seen! Parts along the river that we promised ourselves to return for a summer dip and cafés and shops we’d never come across.

The clues and puzzles kept us guessing, luckily we had the phone number to ring, for if we got stranded (cos we did, once). It was fun like they say, to play with the city, to see it with different eyes, to notice all kinds of details and corners and cool things you don’t see when you’re busy in your day to day.

A perfect thing to do when you have guests in town, but you don’t even need an excuse to just step sideways into your own town to discover a whole new world.

We’d recommend taking your time it doesn’t have to be a race. Grab some friends or family and head out, the ticket is good for six hours. So you can try out that coffee, linger at the playground or just take off your shoes and sink your feet in the river. . .

Zuri Girl Tips

_MG_8533 (2)There’s a fair bit of walking…if you have your pedometer on – let us know how many steps that was. Cos we were sure we earned that dinner at the end…

Best for families with children over the age of 8. There’s quite a lot of walking so bringing the scooter or a snack is a good idea to keep the kids from getting to tired.

Bring your own picnic and enjoy a break halfway.

Beware of that little bit of shopping in Bahnhofstrasse before you start – it ends up a long carry.

Pick a city other than Zurich and spend the day exploring! Foxtrails are also available in Basel, Berne, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Thun, Lausanne, Aargau and Lugao

Ready for the Foxtrail?

_MG_8612 (3) KopieZurich Trail: A new trail, Prometheus, opens July 2015 leading through Zurich’s neighborhoods, Wiedikon, Enge and the University neighborhood.

What to Expect: Participants will have to demonstrate their hacker skills at Google’s HQ, rummage inside the tummy of a giant sloth and even trigger a high tide alarm on the Sihl river! On this trail the fox has left his marks on an abandoned piece of highway, hidden hints behind a waterfall and almost caused a disruption of the train going up the Uetliberg mountain. Even long-time Zurich residents will discover new sides of neighborhoods such as Wiedikon, Enge and the area around the University on this surprising trail.

Cost: Varies based on path & adults.  Family packages are available for a discount.
