Handmade Cards & Workshops

posted on | updated on | by Zuri Girl

Zuri Girl was inspired after being invited to a Christmas Card Making class with Seize the Stamp. Founded by Rachel Izakowicz, a crafty artist who enjoys sharing her skills and helping Zuri Girls (and Zuri kids too) make hand-crafted gifts via her intimate, at-home workshops.

Amazed by the crafty goddess Rachel created in us (well…atleast for an hour or two), we were eager to gossip with this talented lady and find out more about her workshops & online card shop.

Grab your girlfriends for a card-making party with Rachel!

Zuri Girl: You are the queen of card making! Tell us how Seize the Stamp got started.

Rachel: Ha, thats sweet, thank you! My business got started back a few years ago when I was still living in London. I have always loved being crafty and I felt like I wanted to try to make something of it – quit daydreaming and start doing!

Zuri Girl: Why the name, “Seize the Stamp”?

Rachel: Seize the Stamp was something that just came to me as the work I do is mainly with rubber stamping, so it seemed appropriate. I used it for my blog, but I also go by the ‘tag line’ of my business name which is Cards by Rachel – a little less cryptic for those who are not rubber stamp enthusiasts!

Zuri Girl: Have you always been crafty?

Rachel: Yes. My mother is an avid quilter & also has her own business selling handbags, scarves and fabric. I grew up always doing something crafty – sewing, knitting, paper crafts.

Zuri Girl: You must have 10,000 different supplies for card making (no joke!). Tell us about your top 5 favorite tools for the job.

Rachel: Only 5! Thats tough, but here goes! 1) Paper Trimmer, 2) Ink – a few basic colors 3) Rubber Stamps – a couple sentiments (Happy Birthday, Thank You, etc & some floral images), 4) Good quality paper, 5) Ribbon & twine

Zuri Girl: What do you have to say to our girlfriends who don’t have time to hand-make cards?

Rachel: Making cards isn’t for everyone, though you would be surprised how fun & easy it can be. You don’t need to be naturally crafty to participate in a card making workshop or have a go at making something yourself. Stamping makes it so easy – I can’t draw at all, but the stamps do the work for you! But, if it really isn’t your thing, you can of course buy them!

Zuri Girl: Really…You’ll make the cards for us?!

Happily! I sell cards, card-making kits (these are really simple & fun!) and also do bespoke design.

Zuri Girl: What else do you make?

Rachel: Wine bottle tags, gift tags, desk calendars, card-making kits, decorative paper clips – the list goes on!

Zuri Girl: Do you offer 12 months of cards, or any other special offers so we never forget a birthday or anniversary?

Rachel: Yes, I offer a bespoke service where we chat about your card needs and asses an estimate of the number of cards you may need and you can receive your cards in monthly or quarterly installments – you’ll never miss an anniversary or birthday again! Or if you just need something quick, you can simply fill in a form online with the upcoming occasion and I will ensure it arrives with plenty of time.

Love it…wouldn’t be surprised if many ladies subtly share that offer with their hubby’s!

Zuri Girl: What workshops do you have planned for 2014?

Rachel: I am only offering two workshops this winter: Wednesday 26 March at 12:30pm, I will be holding a ‘Beat the Blues Winter Card Making Workshop’ – a nice pick-me-up from those long days of the winter months and in April I will be have an Easter card making workshop on Monday 7 April.

Zuri Girl: What are your top three favorite craft websites or sources for inspiration?

Rachel: Definitely Pinterest – I love it and could spend a lot of hours there! I also love looking around on Etsy for inspiration – there are so many talented designers out there.

Zuri Girl: Are you going to be at the 2014 Women’s Expo?

Rachel: Yes, I will be there! I also sell my cards online at www.seizethestamp.com but for a complete look at what I do, the best place to see me will be the Women’s Expo. I will also be at Kreativa in Zurich in October.
