Discover Switzerland’s oldest city with ancient history dating back 12,000 years BC and continuously populated for the last 5,000 years. Nestled in a beautiful mountain setting between Bad Ragaz, Arosa, Davos and St. Moritz…there are so many charming buildings and narrow alleys to explore.
For your overnight accommodations, the Hotel Sommerau Chur is a perfect destination for couples and families looking for an easy weekend getaway from Zurich. Just an hour and 15 minutes from the city center, you are in the heart of the Grisons region of Switzerland. Here are some reasons we can highly recommend visiting this property…
Who doesn’t love a modern take on the old fashioned drive-in hotel with parking directly outside your room? The pet-friendly rooms are “klein und fein”, the service very good and the restaurant exceptional! On the ground floor, the comfort rooms include a private mini garden…and for families, the 1st floor has wonderful family rooms which include connecting doors. Included in your rate is free wifi, parking and the delicious breakfast is only CHF 10 per person!
You know the restaurant is going to be good when it is filled with locals! The Hotel Sommerau Chur has a wonderfully large and inviting restaurant with terrace. Drop off your bags in the room and enjoy a cocktail on the terrace as soon as you arrive. The menu is complete with delicious specialities from the Grisons region, along with a dedicated selection of Cordon Bleu offerings ranging from the classic to “Calanda Bleu” which is stuffed with bacon and Grison mountain cheese, breaded in Calanda-brewing malt…as the Calanda Bräu factory is located nearby in Chur!
Just a few steps beyond the hotel is a lovely little mountain that seems like an easy hike…but looks can be deceiving. The route is entirely vertical (yet doable!). If you are feeling adventurous, hike up to the top and enjoy lunch at the Naturfreundehaus Brambrüesch. Alternatively, the cable car station is right there at the base and a gondola will gladly transport you to the top in comfort. After hiking back down into the city center, enjoy a cup of Evviva Gelato…quite possibly the BEST ice cream we ever tasted in Switzerland, made by hand with milk made in Chur!
This charming city is generally just a brief stop along the Glacier Express…but trust us when we say you will enjoy spending at least two full days exploring. Whether you choose to just get lost exploring all the shops, restaurants and galleries in the city center, or dive into history at the Graubünden Art Museum there is plenty to keep you entertained in Chur. For a special Swiss souvenir, the Vergolderkunst is the perfect destination to select some local artwork to adorn your walls at home.
