We aim to dig deeper, beyond their designs and into the minds and hearts of what inspires them to dedicate their lives to their brand. Join us on a journey of discovering all things fashionably Swiss…allow us to introduce you to Miriam Sidler.
GG: Tell us about your brand name?
Miriam Sidler: My journey as a cashmere clothes designer started 10 years ago! My brand’s name changed over the years, but it didn’t affect my sense of style nor my vision, so at one point I decided to market my own name and created the “Miriam Sidler Collection” for Cashmere Couture brand.
GG: Tell us about the logo?
Miriam Sidler: The butterfly is closely connected to my nature – free, unencumbered to see the beauty in everything and open to new things. Life is constantly changing which forces us to adapt and transform ourselves! At the first glance, my logo represents the butterfly but when you look closer (and use some imagination) two interlocking hearts are to be seen, and my name of course.
GG: How would you describe your designs?
Miriam Sidler: One of a kind and precious to every human being! My designs are much more than just fashion! It is said that Cashmere is as valuable as gold! Well, it is!! Living in the barren landscape of the high mountains in Asia, Tibet and Mongolia goats develop especially beautiful undercoat during winters when temperature drops to – 40 degrees Celsius! At the end of spring, the farmers (Normaden) comb their goats out of their undercoat and process it to become fine cashmere! I use the best available quality of cashmere fiber in the world for processing my collections! My brand stands for quality, exclusivity and universal chic! I secure this exclusivity by using a sustainable source, the choice of my producer and my work as a company owner, designer, couturier and cutting technician. Same principles apply to my marketing strategy! My bespoke offer is unique with high regard of my customers’ needs. I deliver custom-made pieces of exquisite clothing made to measure and in the color of a client’s choice.
At Miriam Sidler, cashmere is considered as valuable as gold!
GG: Where are most of your items produced?
Miriam Sidler: My main producer is based in Nepal! It’s a second generation family enterprise employing around 30 people. The father of my producer is one of the founding members of the Rugmark Foundation founded by UNICEF in 1995 to prevent child labor!
GG: What is your earliest memory of being inspired by fashion?
Miriam Sidler: Already as a little girl I loved to dress up my dolls – I would paint their faces and make clothes for them using any leftover piece of fabric I could get my hands on. I also loved the Christmas time, when I my mother would take me shopping. I was fascinated by widow displays full of beautiful silk and embroidered gowns to wear during the festive days! My mother had a big influence on me, she could sew very well and had a very fine taste for clothes.
GG: What is your fashion influence?
Miriam Sidler: I have been self-employed for many years working as an interior designer together with my husband. Travels, nature and architecture have always been a great inspiration for me, so are classic movies. Of course my training as a haute couture dressmaker had a strong influence on me too. Among the designers whose inspires me sometimes are Yves Saint Laurent, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cristobal Balenciaga, Madleine Vionnet, Coco Chanel, Elie Saab, Gianni Versace. But the most important source of inspiration for me is the time we live in, it is like a barometer forecasting what will become a priority in the future.
GG: What is your favorite piece that you ever designed?
Miriam Sidler: Oh there are not only one piece, a simple very feminin 4- Set, a little Jacket in with fringes and a long coat dress with crochet borders!
GG: What are your favorite fabrics/textures?
Miriam Sidler: Of course Cashmere yarn, silk, velvet, lace and finest wool texture.
GG: Where do you source your fabrics and where are most of your items produced?
Miriam Sidler: One of the 5 best known yarn Producers of the world in Asia and in Italy.
GG: Can you give some fashion advice to our readers?
Miriam Sidler: Invest in high quality basics you really love. Fit is a key! So better splurge on a tailor made piece rather then make an ill-compromised purchase. Combine your basics with Must Have clothes that will make you feel great. I imagine – a lace top with velvet pants or a long tulle skirt! To me shopping means discovering – new trends, new designers and new shops! Very often you will be better and more honestly advised by sales people working for smaller shops carrying less familiar brands. They seem to identify with and have a passion for what they sell and know to value a satisfied customer. For me, I’m very grateful about and also proud of having been able to build the trust with my clients over the years – nothing is more rewarding then clients’ satisfaction.
