Family Fitness – Winter Guide

posted on | updated on | by Zuri Girl

Being a parent and being fit do not have to be mutually exclusive. While getting to the gym as a busy mum or dad seems may seem like an impossible feat, Zurich offers a wide array of facilities and activities designed to keep the entire family moving all year-round. Here are some of Zuri Girl’s favorite family fitness activities great for the colder seasons.

Climbing: Gaswerk and Milandia Park

Hiking: Uetliberg

What to Expect

With thousands of pristine hiking trails, Switzerland is the world’s ultimate destination for hikers. Although the Alps are only a stone’s throw away, Zurich’s Uetliberg offers several beautiful hiking paths suitable for the entire family. Here are some of Zuri Girl’s favorite trails:

What we Love

Easy: Take the S10 train from Zurich HB to Uetliberg station and allow yourself to get lost in many walking trails to either Altstetten (1 hour) or to Triemli (45 minutes). These paths are well paved and stroller friendly and have 2 fantastic kids’ parks along the way.

Moderate: Families looking for a bit more of a challenge, can hike along the Path of the Planets starting at Uetliberg Tower (S10 to Uetliberg Station) ending at Buchenegg (2 hours). Challenge your family to discover all the model planets, including dwarf planet Ceres and both (yes, 2) of the dwarf plant Pluto models. Families can opt to take the cable car down at Felsenegg (to Adliswil Train Station) or, if looking for an additional challenge, walk back to the Uetliberg Tower (4 hours total trip time).

Challenging: Anyone in the mood for a rigorous, day long fitness challenge, can start their hike the in quaint village of Mettmenstetten (S5 from Zurich HB) walking through various countryside villages to and around Türlersee (3.5 hours) and then up the Albispass (+ 1 hour) down to Zurich Leimbach (+1.5 hours). This challenge takes just under 6 hours and is not stroller accessible. There are, however, many family friendly restaurants along the way that will help everyone recharge.

How Many Francs?

Null, zippo, gratis!

Zuri Girl Tip

Pack smartly: make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks for along the way.

Shoes: Trainers are fine for the easier trails but wear good hiking shoes for the moderate and more challenging trails.

Clothing: On colder days, dress in layers and use waterproof/ wind resistant clothing whenever possible
