New Chef, New Owner, New Events, New Dinner Offer…same old school charm.We sat down with Frau Olejniczak to learn how one of Zurich’s oldest coffee houses is modernizing its tastes while keeping its historical charm.

Over a glass (or two!) of local Regensberg Prosecco and oozing mozzarella delivered directly from Naples we tasted our way through Café Black’s history and invite you to be a part of their future!

The Atmosphere

A few steps between bustling Seefeldstrasse and the Lake Front, it’s unlikely you’ve walked down the industrial street Café Black sits on. If you can re-route your GPS away from the trendier Seefeld center, you’ll step inside a dark and cozy candle-lit restaurant with old fashion coffee machines, cabaret-feeling leather long booths paired with small 2-person tables and dark wooden chairs.

The decor is minimal yet screams historical and the artwork is ever-changing with new artists exhibiting regularly. (If you run out of dinner conversation on that first date, you can discuss the latest exhibition!)

The Food + Drinks

For the past 30 years, Café Black was closed for dinner. Now with a new Chef in town, Italian Chef Alfredo Aronne serves Italian style cooking with a Swiss twist. We loved his Mediterranean take on the traditional Zuri Geschnetzeltes where he matched gnocchi with Meat Geschnetzeltes, Mushroom, Cream Sauce, Parmesan and Chili. Delish!

Creating dishes that share his Italian heart with his global cooking career, Chef Aronne sparks traditional pasta, eat and seafood dishes by adding distinctive flavors with ingredients like Trüffel Honey, Shaved Hazelnut and high quality salts.

Why We Love It

The Buffalo Mozzarella. It was ahhhhmazing! For those who have been lucky enough dine in Naples, you know what we’re talking about. It’s so creamy and oh so delicious! It’s delivered twice a week by a friend of the Chef’s.

The Nostalgia. We spend so much time chasing trendy, fancy hoopla…take a step back…enjoy a piece of Zurich history…Café Black’s long-term wait staff and locals (the ones that read real newspapers not their iphones) can share what life was like ‘way back when’ while brewing you up a traditional style coffee…

Frau Olejniczak. The new owner is so lovely and her heart lies in sharing the delicious tastes of Chef Aronne with the city of Zurich. Originally from Poland, she is an expert in Japanese culture and brings this talent to the restaurant with special Japanese courses and art exhibitions.
