For families looking for a kid-friendly Sunday brunch, you need not look any further than the Zurich Marriott Hotel. Forget the common, limited Swiss hotel breakfast scene of breads, Gipfeli and Müesli. You’ll find all that, along with a variety of foods inspired from around the world, sure to please and fit anyone’s taste and appetite.
Perfect for families (kids under 7 eat free and 7-12 year-olds receive a 50 percent discount), kid-friendly foods and a monitored play area will be sure to please picky eaters and quick dinners, allowing parents to enjoy their second glass of complementary Prosecco while the kids play.
Upon arrival, it’s the standard Marriott Hotel look & feel you know (and love) with a restaurant area that provides a homey, Swiss traditional-chic environment that makes you feel comfortable enough to sit for hours and enjoy the vast variety of foods available for Sunday brunch.
We watched locals and tourists dine together, including large families, couples and a few little girls running around in princess dresses from the hotel’s children play area. The warm interior and bright, large space was filled with the buzz of other diners and their families making a perfect environment for the young and old alike.
Whatever you’re craving you’ll be able to find it artfully dished in a serving bowl along the walls of one of the four rooms filled with food. Upon arrival, the waiter explains the different areas: traditional European brunch options, Thai and sushi buffet (from the adjoining White Elephant Thai Restaurant), Swiss specialties, soup, salad, pasta, antipasti, meats and desserts.
Deciding where to start can be the biggest challenge, except for the children, who seem to be drawn immediately to the Gipfeli and nutella, chicken nuggets, alphabet-shaped French fries and a treasure chest of candy.
We were happy to see unique foods, including Capuns – a traditional Swiss dish from canton Graubünden, made from Spätzle dough with pieces of dried meat and rolled in a chard leaf. The freshly sliced lamb shanks and homemade ice cream with warm berry sauced also happily filled us up.
The courteous and attentive wait staff appeared regularly to remove empty dishes and fill glasses with the complementary Prosecco and coffee, a subtle encouragement for you to continue making the rounds and tasting all of the international foods available.
Make sure you save room for dessert. The option for a sweet finish is equally as vast a choice as the rest of the meal.
Options include doughnuts, cream filled cones, cupcakes, Sauer Knödel and warm vanilla sauce, macaroons, cookies, homemade ice cream, fruit salad and a chocolate fondue fountain, homemade marshmallows, and a variety of Asian-inspired tartlets.
Serving portions are small enough to try a few different options, but it took some self control not to overfill our plates with the artfully designed pastries.
Zuri Girl Tip
Come hungry. We skipped breakfast for our noon reservation and we’re pretty sure we won’t need to eat for the rest of the day. Search out the hard-to-find dishes. The traditional Swiss brunch selections of breads, muesli and cold cuts are available, but we were most drawn to the unique dishes, such as the Capuns.
